Let’s Eat Grandma @ Moroccan Lounge 9/4/18
Beyoncé’s b-day definitely spells good tidings to all who perform.
Pop duo Let’s Eat Grandma consists of two childhood friends, Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth, who contribute both instruments and vocals to their witch-y, unique take on pop. Cloaked in purple, orange, and Joker-green light, the pair looked appropriately soothing and spectral, qualities I would also ascribe to their music.
Barely a murmur came from either during their set, with transitions between songs simply silent air – all the better for digesting their sweeping songs. They only remarked on writing a song with SOPHIE, which to be honest is always something one should brag about. Otherwise, they pretty much streamlined through their latest album, I’m All Ears, saving an I, Gemini, track for the encore.
What surprised me the most was how well these songs translate to a live setting. For music that expands and grows over the course of four-or-more minutes, it never dragged or felt too repetitive. Instead, songs like “Donnie Darko” lulled the audience into their charms, culminating in a minor dance party among a small but enthusiastic portion of the crowd. In just an hour, Walton, Hollingworth, and their dedicated percussionist delivered a straightforward but no less entertaining live set.
Basically, if you like their music, you will like Let’s Eat Grandma live.
