Rico Nasty feat. Maliibu Mitch @ Echoplex 9/6/2018
Ever seen a crowd goin’ apeshit?
When the Echoplex gets the right performer, the venue goes appropriately berzerk. To give you an example of the audience’s excitement, someone scaled the left stage speakers before Maliibu Miitch hit the stage.
She herself handled the crowd with the aplomb of a headliner, firing off verses from “4AM” and “Give Her Some Money” to the delight of the crowd. Dressed in a sparkling ensemble, she blasted through her songs while spending time between tracks by showing off a humorously and adorable side. An added plus, I could not tell if one of her songs was called “For the Gang” or “For the Gays”, but it slapped all the same.
“Come over and get a shirt with a bigass picture of my face!” she exclaimed, her personality still a charm up until her exit.
She primed the crowd for Rico Nasty to blow it up. “Bitch I’m Nasty” heralded her arrival, the starting point of a scene of mosh pits, flying drinks, and the occasional fan or (what I think was a blue) wig being thrown into the air. Amid the chaotic enthusiasm of the crowd, Nasty appeared right at home, blessing us with big hits and deep cuts to equal praise. Truly feel lucky to have heard “Countin’ Up” and “Key Lime OG” in quick succession, and seeing “Rage” life is probably something I’ll tell theoretical grandchildren.
She launched into each song propelled by the previous one, barreling through an invigorating though admittedly short-lived set. According to her, she had places to be. “I gotta go to a Pornhub party!” she explained, and honestly she deserved a night of celebration after this triumphant performance. It’s been a minute since I’ve seen someone get a crowd to thrash like that, and it always #givesmehope to see it hasn’t entirely disappeared in the glare of our phones.
