Amber Mark @ The Roxy 9/19/18
Admittedly, I’ve wanted to see Amber Mark for a while now. Last night confirmed to me why – she’s a star.
Dressed in red, the color of confidence, she glided onto the stage looking stellar and self-assured. The bossa nova elements of “Conexão” made for an excellent introduction, where she enjoined us to dance and enjoy ourselves, her long locks of hair flowing from a very well-placed fan.
“So many faces tonight,” she remarked. “I don’t know who to sing to!”
She comically joked at the drinking line in “Lose My Cool”, praised an audience member for their cool shirt, and pledged to bring us all to church. Much to my blessed surprise, she even played her Wilma Archer collaboration, “Like a Hunger”.
It all felt quite natural from Mark, whose music embodies that same groove and maturity. Vocal flourishes and riffs were impressive without being showy, channeled through her husky contralto. The crowd appeared equally pleased, sang-ing along whether she asked us to or not.
Ms. Mark has big goals on her mind, and she’s well on her way to achieving them.
