Plested and Avonlea @ Madame Siam’s

Two of Atlantic’s rising stars, Avonlea and Plested, took their talents to an intimate showing at Madame Siam’s this week.

Avonlea took the stage first. Though still a teenager, she appeared rather in control of her voice. She used it to lay bare those concerns that come with exiting your teenage years – fears like faded friendships and first loves. “Cars and Boys” resonated the strongest with its observations on growing older and her peers, who, to their credit, do often sing about cars and boys.

Plested followed Avonlea soon after, armed with just his voice and his guitar. As lovely as his voice sounds, it felt awfully similar to acts I’ve heard before. The talent is most certainly there, I just wish he used it to separate himself from the rest of the pack. Singer-songwriters will never go out of style, but they also won’t stand out if they’re not careful.
