Piper Hays @ State Social House 3/8/19

Playing in State Social House’s “Attic” space, Piper Hays gave listeners a heartfelt, personal showcase perfect for her vibe, one she describes as a “wild heart.”

Originally from San Francisco, Hays carries the whimsy artsiness of the Golden City with her. “I found this on the floor of a bar,” she told me when I complimented her jacket. She spoke of her year-long Euro-excursion where she spent her time exploring and busking. It’s a trip that takes guts, but Hays has that and camaraderie in spades.

Her amicable demeanor lent itself nicely to the Attic, a space which felt a bit like a barn or cabin with its wooden interior and slightly rustic air. In turn, the atmosphere proved effective for Hays’ latest project, the aptly named Vagablonde. Her bluesy and soulful debut sounded extra strong in the presence of a talented backing band, who also played at the perfect volume all evening. Having sharpened her teeth in Europe and then in Nashville, Hays premiered her album with the confidence of a veteran performer.

“This life can be cruel/But there’s more than one shade of blue” she sang, carrying as many hopes as she does metaphors. Like Hays herself, this line seeks life’s joy and beauty amidst all the gloom and chaos. It felt like optimism that one can turn to in this day and age, where hope often feels in short supply. Based on the number of people dancing, Hays’ message resonated with more than just me.
