Georgia @ the Moroccan Lounge 10/8/19

“Though she be but little, she is fierce.” -Shakespeare.

Percussionist and singer Georgia Barnes, more well-known as Georgia, walked out onto the stage at the Moroccan Lounge by her lonesome. Short-statured but with a spunky attitude matched by her wild, curly hair, she was the only person on stage for her debut LA performance. Armed with an array of drum pads, synths, and cymbals, Georgia needed only herself to deliver a fully-formed performance.

Though she released a debut album four years ago, Georgia stuck to her new material mostly for the evening, the exception being “Nothing Solutions”. She confirmed a new album for the new year, scheduled for January 10th, so understandably she wanted to show off the new material.

Being alone further heightened Georgia’s stature as a true-blue performer. As strobe lights flickered around her, her silhouette railing against her drums conveyed both power and mystery.

Many compare songs like “About Work the Dancefloor” to Robyn. Yet these songs sound more in common with something like Tirzah’s beat-based songs or SBTRKT’s “New Dorp, New York”. You could hear a touch of punk to “Never Let You Go” while “Started Out” delivered a bit of early 2010s Little Boots. Naturally, “About Work the Dancefloor” elicited the most enthused reactions of the evening.

It seemed as soon as she entered, Georgia left, leaving the audience in awe and want of more. Thankfully, in about three months time, we will get more.
